On November 13 Mary Stachowicz offered Nicholas Gutierrez God's love and forgiveness, and on November 13, Nicholas Gutierrez
punched, kicked, and mutilated Mary Stachowicz with a knife until he got tired. Then he placed a garbage bag over her head, strangled her, and jammed her body in a crawl space under the floor of his apartment.

Gutierrez confessed to the crime and was charged with first degree murder, attempting to  conceal a homicide, and burglary.

On July 2, 2007 AD Nicholas Gutierrez was spared the death penalty and sentenced to life in prison in the rape and murder of  onetime co-worker Mary Stachowicz, 51,  mother of four.
It is commonly believed that Nicholas Gutierrez was spared the death penalty because he is gay and Mary Stachowicz was a Christian.

No major "mainstream" media in Chicago or Illinois covered a candlelight vigil Sunday night (November 13) commemorating the three-year anniversary of the murder of Mary Stachowicz-a devout Chicago Catholic woman who was brutally killed by a homosexual man who reportedly flew into a rage when she challenged him to change his lifestyle.

Now I know why God wrote Leviticus 20:13: If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

Stachowicz' murder is the focus of some attention by conservatives, who regard it an unrecognized hate crime.[6] Groups such as Concerned Women for America have complained about the comparative lack of media attention given to the case which they believe meets the definition of a hate crime against Christians and heterosexuals.

Conservative writer Rod Dreher has written about her death, arguing that it should receive the same level of media attention as the death of Matthew Shepard.

Catholic Bishop Thomas J. Paprocki, an auxiliary bishop of Chicago who knew Stachowicz personally, called her a "martyr for the faith". On the fifth anniversary of her death, Catholic journalist Phil Lawler called for the opening of a formal beatification process.
